We Are The Champions

8"x8" oil on Raymar panel

If you think I mean the folks that work in the National Capitol, NO, not by a long shot.  The Champions are the women and men who participated in the Washington DC Triathlon on June 19.  And, the biggest Champion of all was my daughter, who swam 1.5K (1.2 miles) in the Potomac River, then biked 40 K (25 miles) through the heart of Washington, D.C., and topped it off running 10K (6.2 miles) through the city.  And she smiled and waved as she zipped by us at each viewing point.  I'm so proud of her, I could pop.

Drawing workshop wrap up

Back to color tomorrow...I promise.  I have been painting but I'm becoming much more critical of my drawing within my painting.  Is it possible that I could be anymore critical of myself than I already am?  Why yes.
Roses in a vase.   We covered the paper with conte crayon which is much easier to do than covering it with graphite powder...however, it took about 45 min of muscular wiping to reveal the silhouette.

Form shadows vs cast shadows.  This one was lots of fun.  And a reminder to always think about where the light source is:  between me and the object?  above or below the object?  To the left or right?  Makes a big difference in the shapes of your shadows.

Final drawing of the day.  I did this super fast because I tried doing it slowly, thoughtfully, and my brain started to misfire so I sped up and let intuition take over.   This was after a discussion of design.  The idea is to make a pattern.   Look for the character of the arrangement.  Where are the principle lights and darks?  Color them in big blocks-start with two values and move on from there.  Connect your lights and darks and then ask yourself...is my pattern interesting?  Look for unity, repeating shapes, or having shapes answer each other.
And while you're thinking about all these things and more...don't screw up the perspective!  Does this sound like fun?  Actually, it is.

Drawing workshop continued...

This was an exercise in "drawing through".   I found a great, forgotten book in my art library today which is full of many of the same exercises I learned in the drawing workshop on perspective.  I recommend it to any artist who finds perspective as mind scrambling as I do.

Drawing workshop continued

Tonalism.  We took the conte and went inside out, up and down where we wanted to "draw"

Negative shape drawing.  Draw in the boundry, come in from the boundry, and visualize the skate.

Drawing Workshop Day 1

I learned a lot from Rick Weaver. The nice thing about being an artist is there's no shortage of stuff you get to learn, and relearn, and, for some of us, relearn again...
Drawing tips:
Put your easel upright to avoid foreshortening.  Put the center of the page below eye level.  Hold your conte crayon (which we used through the entire workshop-hard to wipe out or erase) such that you involve your arm muscles rather than just your hand and wrist, therefore giving you less CONTROL.
Be bold with your marks.
"FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. "

Simplify.  How can I simplify to get to the proportions to get at the character of the shape?

Draw a simple envelope shape on your paper to convert what you are seeing to get SIMPLE and enable you to focus on width and height.  Then map out the shape in the envelope.  Draw a midline to keep your side symmetrical (a real challenge for me!)  Put horizontals across.

Plein Air Curacao

I'm too tired to post about my outstanding drawing workshop and need to wrap my brain around a few things before I share.  In the meantime, for those artists out there that would like an exotic and fun plein air adventure, check this out:

and while you are at it, check out Nancy Tankersley's blog about her recent trip there:  http://nancytankersley.com/

Lucky me.  I'm in a workshop with Rick Weaver learning how to draw.  Check out his work:

This workshop is offered by Easton Studio and School

I'll post my drawings at the end of the workshop.  There will be a lot of them.  Lucky you!

still life class #8

9x12 oil
This still life started out with 6 objects and ended up with 4.  And if I had kept at it any longer, it would have ended up in zero...as in wipe out.  Lots to learn in value and drawing.
